Serial Experiments Lain (Quick review)

Serial Experiments Lain is a 1998 anime that will screw your perception of reality.

First of all, I have to say, I loved this anime but IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. There is very serious themes sprinkled all over this anime and it is very heavy. If you are looking for something light and easy to understand, then this is not the thing for you.

I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t talk about it so much. It’s really an experience you should have for yourself.

Serial Experiements Lain is about Lain, a young girl that is trying to figure out who she is and what she represent for the world surrounding her (that’s my interpretation of it but you might have a different take on it) All the while, she is confronted by the reality of her much dystopian world and the Wired, some kind of internet that connects everyone.

At first, I thought I wouldn’t like the art style but I was wrong. The style convey so much more than you could ever think of.

Story wise, it can be really hard to understand and a lot of it is just interpretation. Everything from the sound design to the art style is there for a reason so if you want to experience it to the fullest, you must pay attention to EVERYTHING. And when I say everything, I mean even the absence of sound means something.

Serial Experiments Lain was a very unique experience to me. I’m someone that’s almost always connected and this made me rethink things for a bit. I might even rewatch it to see all the things I missed. I really enjoyed it. (in the wtf way)

What about you, did you watch this anime and did you like it? Hate it? And most importantly, why?
